"When I worked in Darfur and Angola in refugee camps, I was devastated by the sight of people who had been physically and mentally traumatized. This was especially true for the shockingly high numbers of women that had been raped. Mentally paralyzed, they would struggle just to keep going. Because women are so important in African societies and economies, their well-being has far-reaching consequences for entire families and communities. Knowing how much my own welfare is tied up with yoga, I know what an important role it can play in helping war-scarred people overcome the past and regain their rightful place in the future."
